One killed in blasts at Kazakhstan arms depot

A series of explosions at an arms depot near Kazakhstan’s financial capital Almaty overnight killed at least one person and hundreds had to be evacuated from the area, officials said on Tuesday.

A series of explosions at an arms depot near Kazakhstan’s financial capital Almaty overnight killed at least one person and hundreds had to be evacuated from the area, officials said on Tuesday.

It was not immediately known what caused the blasts at the depot, which belongs to the KNB national security service, successor to the Soviet-era KGB.

Explosions at ammunition depots are regular occurrences in former Soviet republics and are usually caused by fire and lax safety standards.
