Alleged kidney thief Dr Amit Kumar’s Canadian mansion is no longer on the market. Deals on the palatial Rs 2.6 crore property were put off soon after the Hindustan Times website www.hindustantimes.com — and subsequently the newspaper — broke news of the sale on Monday.
Around 6 pm Canada time on Sunday (3.30 am India time Monday), however, the listing was abruptly suspended. The brokerage said: “No showings on this property till further notice.”
No reason was given. But it is possible the brokerage — and the lawyer who was selling the house acting “in trust” for Kumar and his wife Poonam Ameet Kumar — were unaware of its background till the HT report appeared.
Tuesday’s edition of the local Toronto Star also reported suspension of the sale. The lawyer was unavailable; his office said he was on vacation this week.
Poonam and her sons were last seen here in early February, when Kumar was nabbed in Nepal. Neighbours said they haven’t seen any recent activity near it. The couple bought the house for $610,000 (Rs 2.5 crore), $457,500 of which was put in by the Royal Bank of Canada.
