Dozens of buildings collapsed after a 7.0-magnitude quake jolted the Indonesian island of Java on Wednesday, but there were no confirmed reports of deaths, an emergency response official said.

"Dozens of houses and buildings collapsed at Tasikmalaya city but there are no reports of casualties yet. Communication there is difficult," health ministry crisis centre chief Rustam Pakaya told AFP.

He said 18 people had been hospitalised in Jakarta with light injuries.
