Do you believe in Santa Claus? The grand old man with his shining white beard and red attire has enticed children since the beginning of time. Whether you believe in the tale or not, the portly old man has always held a special charm.
With Christmas around the corner, two graduates from a college in UK have come up with a novel experiment to bring Santa back to life. Well, almost.
The video posted by Mark Ireland and Cassie Phelps as part of a project called STRATODEAN, features a toy Santa on a sledge pulled by a reindeer.
"This is Santa calling Hui. Hui! Where's that little elf?" The portly toy Santa Claus and his reindeer Rudolph are seen taking off into the air. "Sorry Santa, we hear you loud and clear," says a voice, posing as an elf. "Ho Ho Ho! Let's go for it Rudolph!" says the Santa.
According to the duo's site, the project involves sending a high altitude weather balloon complete with payload to the edge of space (approx. between 70,000 to 110,000 feet up into the Stratosphere).
The balloon is equipped with a camera and video recorder as well as GPS tracking equipment, so that the balloon can be located once it bursts and returns to the ground.
As the toy Santa keeps rising into the air, a funny commentary between the Santa and the elves goes on in the background.
When the balloon is about to burst, a frantic exchange takes place. "Are you hurt?" asks one of the elves. "Ho Ho Ho, not really. Just a small sprain," jokes the Santa.
