Exasperated at the reluctance of the police to investigate her husband’s suicide, the wife of a Dalit BJP leader tried to kill herself. Following the suicide attempt, police now say they have started a probe.

Rinki Poriya, the widow of a local Dalit BJP leader in Raisen district tried to end her life on Saturday over the delay in investigating the charge that her husband killed himself after being embarrassed by local party leaders.

Sharad Poriya (32) had committed suicide a fortnight ago after a video of him apologizing and touching feet of a rival BJP leader was widely shared on social media.

Sources said the BJP was faction-ridden in Udaypura area of Raisen district.

Poriya had allegedly fought with Manish Singh Rajput, another BJP leader and others over a religious procession in April.

Later, local MLAs and the BJP high command tried to sort out the issue and reportedly asked Poriya to apologise by touching the feet of the leaders in a room secretly. Some party members shot a video of it and later posted it on social media and WhatsApp which embarrassed Poriya.

“Some people hatched a conspiracy to defame my husband and they succeeded. My husband couldn’t bear it and ended his life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan,” Rinki (28) said.

For the past 15-days, Rinki was trying to register a case against the BJP leaders for abetment to suicide but police allegedly did not take any action.

A frustrated Rinki, who has a two-year-old son, silt her wrist and throat at her home on Saturday morning. Her in-laws took her to the district hospital in a critical condition. Doctors later referred her to Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal, about 40 km from Udaypura.

The suicide attempt seems to have finally spurred the police into some action.

“We are investigating the matter of the suicide. We had given her assurance that we will register the case after investigating the matter first,” Udaypura town inspector Narendra Bhargava said.
