Last month, when the court found Salman Khan guilty of driving a car under the influence of alcohol, causing the death of one and seriously injuring four other people, his family stood by him like a rock. Now, as the date of the next hearing draws close, the actor’s father, Salim Khan, opens up about the anxious moments he and the family are facing, Salman’s “compassion”, and more.
Who among your kids is the naughtiest, and who is the most sensitive?
No parent can answer this question, as no two children can be the same. A home that offers space and liberties to kids, is one that will never have them growing up as maladjusted individuals.
What was the most important quality that you wanted to inculcate in your children?
I give more importance to sensibility than intelligence. I have seen a lot of intelligent people mess up their lives. Raj Kapoor, Mehboob Khan and Bimal Roy — did they claim they were intellectuals?
How was Salman in school?
He was full of compassion. One day, the principal of his school asked if any student could take one other student home for lunch, as their parents start work early and return home late at night. Salman volunteered to take 12 children home every day. Har din lunch pe hungama hota tha mere ghar (every day there used to be a riot at my place during lunch). On several occasions, he has picked up accident victims outside our house, and taken them to the hospital. Why don’t people talk about that?
The next hearing of the hit-and-run case is approaching. How are you feeling?
Naturally, I am very stressed. When he spent 18 days in jail, I felt guilty about even switching on the AC or eating food. When we went to meet him in jail, he told my wife that she shouldn’t get me to the jail when she comes next. We have always respected the law. Why is his accident case referred to as the hit-and-run case? He had not gone missing after the accident. He had given his statement, and undergone the alcohol test after coming home. Why should anybody pronounce him guilty before the case concludes?
Do you think is the time for Salman to settle down now?
Yes, but it is he who has to feel from within that he has found the girl who will be able to adjust to him. But one thing I can tell you, he won’t have an arranged marriage.
Would you like to write a film for Salman?
I have stopped writing. Besides, if the film clicks, the credit will go to Salman, and if it doesn’t, I will be blamed. Why should I venture into that territory? Besides, even Sohail (Khan; son) and Arbaaz (Khan; son) have to wait for about two years to get him on board because of Salman’s busy schedule.
