A 19-year-old state level Taekwondo player was allegedly stabbed to death, a glass bottle smashed on his head and his throat slit with the broken bottle, allegedly by the owner of an eatery in outer Delhi’s Rohini area on Thursday night.
According to the police, Arun was attacked by the eatery owner after an argument over payment for a plate of momos. Arun was with his friend Ranjith , who also knew the eatery owner.
After stabbing Arun, the eatery owner allegedly left him behind a garbage dump near Jaipur Golden hospital to bleed and allegedly smashed his face with a stone to hide his identity, police said. Ranjith allegedly helped him dispose of the body.
The police identified Arun with the help of a tattoo on his arm.
The incident came to fore after Arun’s parents started looking for him. They went to the police station on Saturday morning to file a missing report. “Arun’s family members said that he left home around 8pm with his friend Ranjit to have momos but did not return home,” a senior police officer said.
“His parents thought that Arun must have gone to his friend’s house for a night stay, but they started worrying after they found his phone was switched off. We have registered a case in the matter and are on the lookout for the eatery owner who is absconding,” he said. Ranjith has been detained and his role is being probed.
The body was spotted by a passerby on Friday afternoon after which the police were informed.
“We immediately informed the family about the murder and sent the body for an autopsy.
We have recorded statements of the other shopkeepers in the area and accessed CCTV footage from the area which is being examined,” police said.
Santram, Arun’s father, who is an MCD employee said, “He participated in several national Taekwondo championships in the past two years and was to represent the country later this year. Why would someone kill him so brutally?”
