No need to pack that extra suitcase for your Paris vacation. Luxury design house Christian Dior has finally opened its doors in Mumbai, at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
Housed in the same wing as regulars like Louis Vuitton and Moschino, the store has a selection of garments, bags, shoes, sunglasses and watches, along with a few pieces of jewellery from the current Autumn-Winter collection. Brand representative for India, Kalyani Chawla says, “Some of our best customers are from Mumbai. They had to travel to our stores in Delhi before to pick up stuff, and I know of people who fly in just to buy something and come back. We finally found a place that suited us and we’re very excited.”
With only watches for men, even the womenswear collection might seem sparse at the moment, mostly because Mumbai’s balmy weather doesn’t leave much room to retail within an Autumn-Winter collection. With the exception of a few sweaters and knit dresses, it’s obvious that the collection had been tailored to suit Mumbai’s needs.
But the iconic Lady Dior bag is there in her much-sought after glory, including the rare aubergine shade, along with sunglasses and shoes. Chawla admits that the brand’s accessories are the biggest sellers, saying, “It’s a phenomenon common to every brand in the world. It’s a lot easier for people to walk into a store and pick up a bag or a pair of shoes rather than buying a gown.” She grins, “Also, every woman needs many, many bags.”
