It was like a homecoming for Sana Anjum, Jannat Jamsheed and many other Pakistani students when they reached Lucknow on Monday. Despite being on Indian soil for the first time, they never felt out of place.

After alighting from the train at Charbagh station, they got a royal welcome with an ekkatonga ride, a trademark of the city of nawabs.

While they were having the joyride, a band was in attendance in the honour of two delegations from Habib Public School, Karachi and SLS Montessori School, Rawalpindi.

The students are in town as part of City Montessori School’s ‘Aao Dosti Karein’ initiative.

“I never thought we would be getting such a grand reception away from our homeland,” said Sana, holding both the Indian and the Pakistani flags.

“Not even for a moment we felt that we were in a different country. During our eight-day stay we will be celebrating Diwali with Indian students. I am really looking forward to it,” said Jannat, a Class 6 student of SLS school. These girls are big fans of actors Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif.

The duo believes that barring geographical boundaries and political differences, people of India and Pakistan are quite similar.

The students from Pakistan will be participating in ‘Confluence 2012’, the world unity and world peace festival from November 8 to 11 at CMS World Unity Convention Centre, Kanpur Road.

The delegation of Habib Public School, Karachi comprises of two teachers and nine students while that of SLS Montessori, Rawalpindi comprises of three teachers and 10 students. The students’ average age is 10-15 years.

“We our looking forward to making friends with our Indian counterparts during this visit,” said Laiba Khan, a student of Class 8.
