Actor Freida Pinto, best known for her role as Latika in the Danny Boyle film, Slumdog Millionaire (SM), has shed, and literally, her good sophisticated Indian girl image. The 28-year-old strips into a two-piece and gets cosy with pop sensation Bruno Mars in the video for his song, Gorilla. And what’s more, the Mumbai-bred actor, who now lives in Hollywood, has shocked fans with her sudden image change.

Daisy Jones, a fan from the US, wrote on an online forum, “Brilliant, talented actress, did she really have to do this? Disappointing.” Aseem Chabra, another user on Twitter, wrote, “Steaming hot @BecauseImFreida is a stripper in this video, but how will she show it to her family?”

However, a press note from Freida’s publicist clarifies why the actor decided to dance dirty, much like Rihanna in her recently released single, Pour It Up, and Miley Cyrus in Wrecking Ball.

“Freida’s look in Gorilla is quite a departure from what we otherwise see. Apparently, when she was approached with this opportunity, she knew that this would be a reincarnation of sorts for her and she was quite thrilled to do it, being the risk taker that she is,” the note reads. The video, which was released on October 15, had 3.5 lakh hits at the time of going to press. Freida, who made her debut with the role of a quiet girl in SM, stuns everyone with her new-found avatar as Isabella, the love interest of Bruno. In the video, she is seen doing a quick striptease, and then getting cosy with Bruno in the back seat of the car as the singer croons, “You and me baby making love like gorillas.”

This comes after her film Trishna (2011) showed her in some lovemaking sequences that went largely unnoticed. While she has received her share of brickbats for the act, some fans are impressed with her boldness. “People only knew her as Latika from Slumdog ... and she had to break it. After I saw the video, I was like wow,” says Siddhant Sarkar, 19, a die-hard Freida fan.
