Ramlila, the saga of victory of good over evil, will be staged at 60 venues in Chandigarh, an increase in scale of 50% over past year when 40 venues were used and the show starts Saturday (October 1) onwards. As the scale and reach increases, HT does a recce of what is in vogue. At our first stop in Sector 23, we meet BP Gaur, general secretary of Kendriya Maha Sabha Ramlila, Chandigarh, and he is pleased about what he sees as far as enthusiasm in residents for Ramlilas is concerned.
“Artistes are enthusiastic. The municipal corporation has given permission to hold Ramlila at 60 places,” he says, adding that some sectors will now be staging the show at two places. In Manimajra, there will be four Ramlilas compared to two last year. Gaur added that they would be pleased if the UT administration could add another ground as the official site of Ramlilas to the existing ground at Sector 27.
“We request the administration to declare another ground as official Ramlila space,” he claimed. Ramlila committee president at Sector 27, Dharampal said that last year they did not get
good response to use of technology last year. “People like to watch traditional Ramlila,” he added. To put up a good show, Ramlila groups have hired professional singers and rehearsal has been on at some places for more than a month. “We rehearse at night,” says Dharampal.
