As many as 10 members of the youth wing of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were injured after the Chandigarh Police resorted to lathicharge, water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse the crowd on Chandigarh-SAS Nagar border near the YPS roundabout in Sector 57 on Sunday.
The protesters were trying to enter Chandigarh to gherao Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s residence to press for a time-bound judicial probe by a retired high court judge into alleged involvement of agriculture minister Tota Singh and others in the pesticide scam.
Among the injured was president of women’s wing, Aam Aadmi Party, Baljinder Kaur. The injured were admitted to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh.
Earlier, speaking to mediapersons at SAS Nagar, AAP youth wing president Harjot Singh Bains said the good response to the protest was a reflection of the anger among the public over Tota Singh’s continutation as a minister. “The pitiable condition of farmers due to crop failure, whitefly attack on cotton crop, distress sale of paddy and basmati rice and pesticide scam has led to a number of suicides, especially in the Malwa region of the state,” he said.
Bains demanded a time-bound judicial probe by a retired high court judge into the suicides of farmers due to pesticides scam and the alleged involvment of Tota Singh and others in it.
