Come Saturday noon on April 21, and a 24-hour live photography race focusing on the environment will be flagged off at Maharashtra Nature Park (MNP), Sion. Anyone with a digital camera of five megapixel or above can participate in this competition. There are three categories to opt for— Foto Feature, Best Fotograph and Best Macro Shot. The winner will take home Rs 20,000 in the first category while Rs 10,000 is at stake in the other groups.
“This race caters to those passionate about photography and nature. We have ensured a level playing field by keeping a restriction on the type of camera used and banning photoshop,” says Paresh Pimpale of Eco Folks, the organisation behind Fotothon 2012. There is no geographic restriction.
Once the race is flagged off, people can head to any part of the city or beyond. “They only need to return to MNP by noon on Sunday and submit their images,” he adds. Hundred odd people have signed up for the event.
The Foto Feature is the main event and will test the participant’s skills of narrating an environmental-based issue through a series of five photographs. They will have to do so by weaving out a story with the help of pictures and detailed description through captions. Paresh says, “This is the only category to have a topic. It will be disclosed to the participants an hour before the race.”
There is also a category for corporates, but their entry fee is pegged at Rs 20,000 for five employees. The proceeds from this race will go towards supporting leopard conservation and the climate change awareness campaigns. Photographers seemed kicked about the event. “I am an amateur photographer. This event will give me a chance to showcase my skills,” says Smitha Karnik, a housewife from Mulund who is gearing up for the race.
