Art served hot

When an art show opens in the Capital, one conventionally expects it to be held at an art gallery. But Delhi-based artist, Sharmishtha Dutta, chose to exhibit her works at a cafe. Inaugurated on April 15 at Mocha ArtHouse, the showcase includes nine abstract works.

When an art show opens in the Capital, one conventionally expects it to be held at an art gallery. But Delhi-based artist, Sharmishtha Dutta, chose to exhibit her works at a cafe. Inaugurated on April 15 at Mocha ArtHouse, the showcase includes nine abstract works.

“This is not for the first time I am exhibiting at a cafe. I have done it before, and I do it because I feel such spaces are not controlled. It gives an artist a lot to experiment with.” Though a cafe, ArtHouse has been designed in a way that enables it to host such exhibitions. They have showcased works of other artists too. “A cafe space attracts lots of youngsters, and people who visit them are not necessarily interested in art, but, they don’t mind getting a dose of it while on an outing with friends and family.”

For Dutta’s artworks, the medium is acrylic on canvas, wood and glass. She says, “It took me almost a year to complete these works because during this time I experimented a lot and developed lots of new techniques.” The artist was earlier into advertising and shifted to art, full-time, three years back. “I always wanted to paint but the shift was not easy, and I knew that I could not sail in two boats at once. So I left my job to pursue my passion.”
