One of the long running art shows in the city, Harvest is back to celebrate its 12th year. This edition focuses on Indian contemporary art with a generous dose of tribal and miniature art.
“Each year we are very selective about showcasing artworks for this annual show,” says Payal Kapoor, curator of the show. She adds, “This year we are showing how Indian art matured over the years and carved it’s own identity. The works selected have distinctly Indian ethos.”
From connecting art with poetry and cinema to depicting the importance of money under during recession and portraying the sensitive issue of 26/11, the exhibition has come a long way in the last 11 years. The exhibition has five sections - Abstract, Modern, Contemporary Indian Art, Sculpture and Photography that showcase works of 70 artists from around the country.
Most interesting at the show are miniature artists such as Chhotu Lal from Rajasthan and Mahavir Swami from Bikaner whose works are displayed along with veterans such as MF Husain, SH Raza and Arpana Caur. “We try to add a new element to the exhibition every year. Last year we displayed video installations, this year we have made a special effort to showcase tribal and miniature art,” says Kapoor.
The only tribal artist whose works are put up at the show is Dhavat Singh from Madhya Pradesh. Singh’s paintings reflect the relationship between nature and life on canvas. The colours range from muted blues, greens and browns to a liberal dose of black and white. Chicago based artist SV Rama Rao’s abstract painting of Krishna with Gopikas is also being showcased under Indian Modern Art for the first time. “We look forward to the era when tribal art will be displayed alongside
modern contemporary art around the world,” says Suneet Chopra, co-curator.

The art pieces, displayed at the ongoing exhibition, range from R75,000 to 3 lakhs.
