Nicholas Roerich, a prolific Russian painter, philosopher, writer, peace activist, traveler and educationist, was a firm believer in cultural preservation. With a range of 7,000 paintings put up in all major museums of the world, his work reflects the ideals and passion for humanity, culture and knowledge.

To celebrate his works and to take forward his message of peace, an exhibition of his prints and photographs is being organised by the Academy of Third World Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia along with the Russian Centre of Science and Culture. Titled Banner of Peace, the exhibition will showcase prints of Roerichs’ works. A collection of photgraphs will throw a spotlight on his journeys through India, Central Asia, Tibet, China and Mongolia, which inspired and shaped most of his work and philosophy.

It was in the course of his journeys that Roerich realised the need to preserve cultural heritage in times of conflict. He envisioned an international effort and thus, the ‘Banner of Peace’ pact came into existence, which was internationally accepted in 1935.
