It’s a known fact that in the art world, the creator is often considered bigger than his creations. So while a number of artworks may go under the hammer simultaneously, it’s usually the established artists who fetch higher prices, irrespective of the quality of their work.

That’s set to change today when an auction puts up 50 paintings and sculptures by various artists for bidding. For the first time, the names of the artists won’t be revealed. “Several artists share the thought that galleries host shows for only renowned artists, and they throw fancy parties just for celebrity presence rather than the appreciation of art,” says Daxa Khandwala, who came up with the concept along with four other artists.

Buyers will be asked to bid by secret ballot and will be told the artists’ names only after the auction is concluded. “We have a wide range on offer, from Rs 30,000 to Rs 2,00,000,” says another of the founders, Monica Jalota.

There are already plans to take this format forward more frequently. “We got an overwhelming response when we approached artists. We’re doing a show in Dubai early 2013, followed by Singapore and UK,” confirms Khandwala.

The Anonymous Art Show is being held today and tomorrow at CK Nayudu Hall, CCI Club, Churchgate.
