When you enter a room, what’s the first thing you do? Switch on the light, and things invisible in darkness, start taking shape. Artworks have been designed at an upcoming group exhibition, And Then There IS Light…to explore the concept of light, which travels through infinity.
Sculptures shining bright in the yellow and blue light attract viewers. “The idea is to show how one can live with art, which isn’t restricted to the domain of a 4x4 canvas,” says Monica Jain, curator.
The art show is also draws inspiration from the James Turrell light and space movement in the United States. “We live in a tropical country where there’s enough light yet people don’t get sufficient vitamin D. The hide and seek of light and the fascination with quantum physics made me ask artists to create these works,” adds Jain.
Among the exhibits by 10 artists, there is a sculpture made of leather by artist Ankon Mitra. There’s also a circle of acrylic boxes with light bulbs inside and reflective mirrors outside. It also includes Pooja Iranna’s sculptures – Harmony and The Twist – made of stapler pins. “I’m inspired by the architecture around me,” says Delhi-based Irrana, adding, “When you place these sculptures in specific light, there’s a play of shadow that they create.”

{{/usCountry}}Besides illuminated illustrations, artist Bhartti Verma showcases paintings that play with the light in her home. “The painting, Interminability, is made of pen on paper, and narrates an emotional story by focusing on interiors in the light and dark,” says Verma, whose canvases have a calming effect on the viewer.
