Well, it’s a play about a village that’s under the curse of stupidity. Called Mix-veg in hot garlic sauce, the comic play by Desires Unlimited — which earlier produced Jai and Juliet — is an adaptation of playwright Neil Simon’s piece — Fools.
The play will be in Hindi and is a desi adaptation of the original script. “I had first read the script while I was in IIT. That time, the idea of developing this script, which is set in a Russian background, did not seem possible. But recently, I started working on it again,” says Hemant Kathuria, the director of the production.
The audience will get to witness a village, which has been under a curse of stupidity for 200 years. Every villager there is a fool. “When Simon wrote this play, he thought it was so stupid that it will be a flop. But this stupidity made it a historical script and a great success,” says Kathuria.
With ten actors in total, the plot revolves around Mohan, a young enthusiastic teacher, who pays a visit to the village to remove the curse, but falls in love with Radha, a beautiful and ‘stupid’ girl. Then enters Nawab, the villain, who wants to marry Radha against her wish. “The idea was to come up with something that is not usual.
We wanted to give unique and fresh content to the audience,” says Kathuria. The director says adapting the script was a challenging task. “I had to rewrite some parts of the script. The ending in the original script is very short. I authored the conclusion so that it gives a complete closure to the play,” he adds.
