The Capital gets ready to celebrate Janmashtami today and tomorrow. In our continuing coverage of events in town around the spirit of the festival, we look at a musical performance, a dance show and an art exhibition that mark the occasion.
Alluring art
This art exhibition in town showcases festivity, joy and spirituality, apt to the spirit of the celebration in the air. From depicting Krishna to painting temples of Varanasi, the group show sees works by Durga Charan Das, Rakesh Mandal, Ram Onkar and Sanjeev Mondal. Besides affordable paintings, one can also spot quirky art objects made from kettles, canisters, trays, statues and vases.

Divine dance
She has been a master of the classical Kathak dance over the years but staying in the spirit of festivities, Uma Sharma (and her group) will be back with her annual Janmashtami dance act. She will recreate rasa leela (or rasa dance), a dance form which lord Krishna was popularly known to perform with goddess Radha and her sakhis (female friends). The dance show will unfold alongside poetry in Hindi by Gopal Das Neeraj. The evening promises to eventually amalgamate art, literature, festivity and folklore.

Religious rock
In what is a one-of-a-kind musical band, Rising Sun plays spiritual rock around the world. They will be seen performing in the Capital on the occasion of the festival. An eight-member band, they are a bunch of Krishna devotees from various countries including India, Mauritius, Lithuania and England. While chanting Sanskrit mantras, they read out the meaning in English after each verse. Although the band is best known for their grand yearly pre-Janmashtami performance, Mantra Rock, they will once again take stage on the festival day.
