Delhi University fests are no more just about performances by rock bands and Bollywood celebrities. The students are up for trying new things. The annual fest of Gargi college, Reverie 2011, will see a Haasya Kavi Sammelan today (the second day of the fest). A comparatively new trend for the Delhi University’s fest spirit, the humourous poetic reciting by haasya kavi Surender Sharma along with Alok Srivastav and Praveen Shukla, is set to enthrall the audience.

Complimenting the theme of the fest — Gesturing Gestures — and as a part of the special feature of the festival’s sub theme — Beyond Bollywood — the recital is an effort by the college to inculcate in its students, the appreciation for native art forms.

“With the passing years, DU fests are seeing more and more Bollywood celebrities perform. We wanted the students to know more about their culture and hence, we included the Kavi Sammelan and Qawwali recital in the annual festival”, says Meera Ramachandran, the college principal.

The fest was inaugurated yesterday with a sufiana Qawwali recital by Nizami Brothers, which received an applauding response from the students.

While institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru University and IITs are known for hosting Haasya Kavi Sammelans, this is the first time that a college in Delhi University college is hosting such an event as a part of its annual fest.

The Haasya Kavi Sammelan is scheduled to start at 2pm and is free of cost. The sammelan will be followed by the concluding event of the fest — the rock night, which will see Bollywood singer Mohit Chauhan perform. The time for the rock night is 5pm.
