If you are passing by a truck on the road, the one thing that is sure to catch your attention is what’s written behind it. Such is the popularity of the phrases behind Indian trucks that they can even influence artwork, like the exhibition - Dented Painted by artist Alex Davis.
Five installations of phrases seen behind trucks, such as, Ok, Stop, Blow Horn, Phool Patti and Neel Kamal, are on display at The Aman Hotel in the Capital.Road-struck
Having travelled far and wide across India by road, the observations during these trips have inspired Davis to create these installations.
“The phrases behind the trucks have an indigenous flavour, combining popular culture, street graffiti and a home-grown language. They catch the attention of many driving behind the truck,” says Davis.
The rustic feel of the installations, along with the sleek fonts in bright colours, are reminiscent of the popular culture of India. “We are used to seeing these forms on a daily basis, thus they represent the pop art of today’s India for me,” says Davis.
Curated by The Aaparao Gallery, the works are a marked departure from earlier sculptures by Davis in form and finish. While he has mostly taken inspiration from nature to create artwork from stainless steel earlier, for Dented Painted, Davis has used sheet steel to make the installations.

Though his works over the last six years have had a mirror polished look, the road-side inspired creations are bright and vibrant. Each installation is priced at Rs 5 lakhs.
