Honoured to play Tagore’s wife: Raima

Actor Raima Sen is euphoric after being offered her dream role as Rabindranath Tagore’s wife Kadambini Devi in Rituparno Ghosh’s untitled next, which is a bilingual docu-drama in English and Bengali.

“Tagore symbolises Bengal’s art culture. I studied his poetry in school,” she says, adding, “Despite his tragic past, Tagore wrote beautifully. I am totally in love with his work and so blessed to be working on so many of his stories. And now, to play his wife is an honour.”

This is the fourth time the actor is playing a role in a film based on the Bengali writer’s work. In the past, she has featured as Tagore’s vibrant female characters in films like Nauka Doobi (2010), Choker Bali (2003), The Japanese Wife (2010) and Khela (2008).

On a high after Nauka Doobi went to the London Film Festival and Memories of March to be showcased at International Film Festival, Goa later this year, Raima Sen wants to concentrate only on meaningful cinema. “I have tried to cater to the commercial space but without a good role, it hasn’t worked for me. Now on, I will only pick up scripts that offer good roles. People associate me with that kind of cinema,” says the actor, who spent this Diwali with her mom and sister in Kolkata.
