In a bid to keep Gandhian principles alive and ensure that more people are made aware of his philosophy of a simple life, the Rotary Club of Bombay Film City will organise street plays on the lesser-known aspects of Mahatma Gandhi’s life.
The plays make up the last phase of the club’s Relive Gandhi campaign that commenced three months ago. “Through these street plays we want to reach out to every generation and spread Gandhian preaching and ideologies,” says Divya Pardeshi, public relations and marketing director 2010-2011 of the Rotaract Club of Bombay Film City.
Called Sada Jeevan, the street play has been written by Brijesh Sharma. Sharma is a Gandhian himself, who has also been awarded by former President APJ Abdul Kalam for his writings on Gandhi.
Sada Jeevan comprises of six characters, out of which two are positive and two are negative. Its central characters also feature a madari (one who trains monkeys) and a jamunda (monkey) who roam the streets of Mumbai and observe how its citizens now crave luxury instead of a simple life.
“The play has an intense message to deliver, but not without a humorous edge. Its motive is to create awareness. We will also draw inferences from Gandhi’s life and talk to people about how and why he advocated a simple life,” says Pardeshi.
The play will be staged at Juhu, Vile Parle, Santacruz and Khar. The initial part of the Relive Gandhi campaign included a Gandhian Summit held on January 26, a visit to Manibhavan and Raddi Do Khadi Lo programme in which people were asked to donate raddi (junk) in return for khadi articles like napkins, floor mats, handkerchiefs, almond oil and essence sticks.

Sada Jeevan will be performed on Monday, May 10, at the beach near Tulip Star, Juhu, at 4 pm. The venue will then shift to the beach near Mocha in Khar. After that the troupe heads to Lion's Garden and Rajesh Khanna Garden.
