Sanjna Kapoor insists that her decision to leave Prithvi Theatre to launch her new company, Junoon, is not the result of a feud. “There’s no masala, sadly,” she says, adding, “We’ve been working on it for about seven months now. In March, we’ll announce in more detail what Junoon will entail. It’s very exciting, but very terrifying… like giving birth to a new baby.”
However, Sanjna admits that she doesn’t see what all the fuss around her leaving is about: “The decision came from strength, and both of us (brother Kunal Kapoor and her) decided that this was the best way to make it happen.”
The theatre doyenne, who has become synonymous with the much-loved Juhu complex over the years, says she now plans to devote her energy towards taking the performing arts to small towns. "It’s sad that the same places my grandfathers travelled to with their theatre companies still don’t have access to the performing arts and culture. We will be the connector between theatre companies and these areas. We will also be relying on the relationships we have built at Prithvi over the years to create that accessibility," she says.
Kapoor reveals that close collaborators have expressed their excitement, and pledged continued support. “Also, a lot of what we do with the new company will be held at Prithvi,” Sanjna says, putting an end to the rumours. “Summertime (annual theatre camp for kids) will come under Junoon’s wing, but it will still be held at Prithvi. So there will be plenty of synergy between both companies.”
