Laughter is perhaps the best way of getting a message across. With that in mind, students of Jazba — the dramatics society of Ramanujan College — organised a street play festival last Saturday. The Sagar Nagpal Street Festival was dedicated to former student Sagar Nagpal, who passed away in 2011, and was a member of the society.
The festival saw 14 teams from different colleges taking part in the competition. And, each play — lasting over 10 minutes — made it tougher for the judges to decide which one was the best. Jazba dealt with the theme of starvation in their act. "It is a very serious problem. You do not realise the importance of it (food) until you don’t get it. People keep on wasting food, failing to realise that there are people in this world who are living without it. The message we want to send is to share food and not waste it," said member Guneet Singh.
Mannat Singh, a student from Shaheed Bhagat Singh college, explained the concept behind their street play.
“It is based on the troubles faced by the Jarawa tribe in Andaman and Nicobar islands after the Great Andman Trunk Road was made in 1970,” he said.
The other teams, too, covered the various other problems that are currently plaguing the society. The issues that were addressed included censorship, gender harassment, corruption and caste discrimination.
