High Street Phoenix, in association with the Rotaract Club of Jai Hind College, is organising a dance competition to mark International Dance Day on April 29. Colleges from all over the city will participate in the event titled The Streets. It will comprise two dance competitions, one involving street dance performances by groups and the other, solo B-Boying acts.
“We believe in supporting and promoting amateur talent. This event will provide them with a platform to perform in front of an audience,” says Rajendra Kalkar, senior centre director, High Street Phoenix. Charmi Mehta, vice president, Rotaract Club of Jai Hind College, adds, “We chose to showcase their talent through street dance as it is the most versatile form of expression and is accepted internationally. Street dance is not about the technique; it’s more about the attitude that comes forth during the performance.” Hinduja College in Charni Road, HR College in Churchgate and St Andrews in Bandra are some of the 30 colleges that will participate in the event. It will be judged by a dance professional and the winning team stands to win gifts worth R15,000.
Apart from the competition, students of Nalanda Foundation, an NGO for dyslexic children, will also be performing salsa routines for the opening and closing ceremony. “Earlier this month, we organised a pottery workshop with Nalanda Foundation, which was a big success. This time, the students will set the mood for the event with a special Latin dance performance,” says Kalkar.
