One of the greatest artists to ever walk the planet, Leonardo Da Vinci, was born today in 1452. He’s best known as the creator of revered masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, but few know that Da Vinci was also the first person to design a helicopter — that too in 1493, centuries before the first aeroplane took off.

The artist used an aero-dynamic screw from a children’s toy from Asia, strings and linen, to make the helicopter, which he named Arial-Screw. Though the design was never put into use, it was nonetheless the first step to the modern day flying choppers. Happy Birthday genius.
