Zumba is a fitness routine based on a mix of Latin-American dance forms. The class at Andheri’s Fitness First, conducted by Mugdha Chavan, Chirag Aggarwal and Roshan Singh, saw a lively group of young mothers gyrating to Elvis Presley’s ‘Tutti frutti’ and Pitbull’s ‘Hey baby’. “I was enjoying myself so much that I didn’t realise how time flew,” says 25-year-old Isha Gupta, the mother of a two-year-old. “A zumba workout can be a good substitute for gymming for ladies who want to tone up,” says Chavan.

At Bandra’s Temperence, which saw the largest turnout, age was no bar. “It was the first time I ever danced to zumba. My mother and I had a blast,” said Rita Guta, a middle-aged mother who came in with her own mother, who is in her sixties. Sucheta Pal, instructor, says, “It’s a complete cardio workout. Music makes it more fun. Mothers and daughters got a chance to spend quality time together. This is one of the things they wouldn’t imagine doing with each other.”

At Worli’s Yuj Dance and Fitness centre, mothers came out with full gusto. “I am glad I took out time to come here. I love the energy and zest,” says Khushboo Panchi, a housewife. Intructors Hetal Madhiwalla, Shiv Kewat and Phillip Manuel said that the class turned out to be more fun than they expected. “All the mothers were very high spirited. We gave them a mix of easy and complicated steps to make it interesting,” says Madhiwala.
