The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has sought information from the district administration and the Bhopal Municipal Corporation about two illegal colonies —Shiv Nagar and Murli Nagar — developed on 52-acre government land.

These two colonies, developed by Goyal Builders & Constructions and some other builders upon the government land near Karond Square in Bhopal between 1992 and 2005, were declared illegal by the Jabalpur High Court in 2005.

Also, the HC had banned further construction on the land. So, after receiving a volley of complaints that the HC order has been flouted and nothing has been done to vacate the government land, the EOW conducted an inquiry into the matter and registered a case against Goyal Builders and others on September 22 this year.

Owner of Goyal Construction and Builders, Ashok Goyal who was earlier arrested by the Bhopal police in connection with a fraud case was also arrested by EOW for setting up the illegal colonies and was sent to Jail after five days of interrogation.

"Without connivance of district and BMC officials, such colonies could not be developed on government land. We have sought information about all the district and BMC officials, who were posted in revenue department. And, their role in the illegal construction will be investigated," said an EOW officer, on condition of anonymity.
