Addressing a rally in Mandla, the 62-year-old Congress chief called upon tribals to ask the state government where the funds had gone.

The Congress government, said Sonia, had given tribals legal rights on forestland, while the BJP-led NDA did nothing to frame such a law. It is the Congress that works for the upliftment of the deprived sections of society, she added.

Listing the achievements of her party, she said the rural employment guarantee scheme gave jobs to over four crore villagers across the country.

Without naming any party, she asked if any politician had sacrificed his life for the country. Indiraji and Rajivji laid down their lives for the country. The Congress has a legacy of sacrifices, she said.

She appealed to the people to strengthen the hands of the Congress for development of the country and welfare of the poor.

Referring to the recent Naxal attacks in the state, Sonia spoke of bringing “misguided” youth into the mainstream.
