Conjoined twins, having separate heads, vital organs but three legs, were born to a couple in Rewa at Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
The twins are joined by the waist, which happens in one out of 5 lakh cases, say medical experts.
The twins, weighing 4 kg together, are admitted at the special newborn care unit (SNCU) of the hospital. Doctors are awaiting stabilisation of their condition while they have referred the case to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur for a separation surgery.
The girls were born to Rani Vasudev from Rewa, surprisingly in a normal delivery procedure on Thursday morning. Before this, Rani has had two normal deliveries. Contrary to norms of the Janani Suraksha Scheme, according to which pregnant women should undertake regular check-ups every month, Rani did not avail for a single check-up before this delivery.
“We tried to get a Janani Suraksha Card but didn’t get one. We are poor and couldn’t afford a private check-up,” said Rani’s husband Rahul Vasudev.
Pediatrician Dr Shabd Singh said, “A sonography test would have revealed the situation but it is unusual that the woman had no trouble during pregnancy.”

{{/usCountry}}“The problem is that one of the twins has fully developed legs while the other has one leg which is yet to develop. So, fixing the surgery date now is an issue,” added Dr Singh.
