The Madhya Pradesh government has asked the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Bhopal, to explain under what circumstances was the driving licence of AICC general secretary and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh renewed on a holiday.
According to a senior RTO official, Singh’s driving licence was renewed on the second Saturday of the month (June 9), the day he was in Bhopal.
The state’s transport department has asked regional transport officer Mohanlal Soni why the office was opened on a holiday to renew Singh’s licence.
Soni admitted to HT that he had been asked to explain the alleged ‘favour’. He said it was a procedural lapse on the part of assistant regional transport officer Bipin Mishra. “He should at least have asked for my permission before completing Singh’s licence renewal formalities on a holiday,” said Soni.
He said Singh had completed all the formalities of licence renewal on May 12 and only needed to get his photo clicked at the transport office. According to Soni, Mishra said in his explanatory note that he was in office on Saturday to complete pending work and when approached, had allowed Digvijaya to complete his photo formalities despite it being an off day.
Mishra refused to comment, saying the RTO should be contacted for a comment on the issue.
Transport Commissioner SS Lal said he was aware of the issue but did not initiated an inquiry into the matter.
Singh could not be contacted for his comments.
A staffer at Singh’s office said on condition of anonymity that Digvijaya was photographed for licence renewal on
Saturday and the new licence was actually made on Monday.
Since the photo process for a driving licence was outsourced to a private company, this was no case of the transport office going out of its way to oblige Singh, he said.
Taking a dig at the Congress leader, state BJP president Prabhat Jha said, “Digvijaya Singh has always made a mockery of rules and still believes that he is the chief minister. This act just shows his arrogance.”
