A 21-year-old engineering student in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district died of a heart attack on Saturday after watching a regional language horror movie clip , police said.

The incident came two days after a 68-year-old man died while watching the Hollywood horror movie, The Conjuring 2, in Tamil Nadu, around 1800 km away.

The Bachelor of Engineering (BE) student, Vimlesh Pandey was found dead on Saturday morning in a rented room in Rewa’s Indira Nagar locality, where he stayed with cousin, sources said.

A resident of Tyothar area of Rewa, Vimlesh appeared in the last paper of the ongoing BE-Final examination at the Jawaharlal Nehru College of Technology (JNCT) in Rewa on Friday.

He came back at the room in the evening and cooked dinner for himself and his cousin, police said.

After having dinner, Vimlesh downloaded a horror movie clip of regional language on his cellphone and started watching it while his cousin went to sleep, sources added.

“On Saturday morning, Vimlesh’s cousin went for his coaching classes, but on return at around 8 am, found Vimlesh still asleep. He tried to wake up Vimlesh, but when the BE student didn’t wake up, neighbours were called,” said Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital (SGMH) police outpost in-charge RB Sharma.

Meanwhile, doctors who performed the autopsy said he died of a heart attack. “If he had watched the horror movie before going to sleep, the role of fear after watching the movie having triggered the heart attack in sleep cannot be ruled out,” said SGMH chief medical officer Dr SK Pathak, who conducted the autopsy.
