The police are yet to identify the persons who are responsible for sending this forged letter to superintendents of police (SPs) of over a dozen districts across Madhya Pradesh.

The transfer order which appeared to have been sent from PHQ was 'issued' last month. The communication was in the set format and hence officials believed that it was sent from PHQ. This fake order was issued on November 14. It even bore forged signature of the officer.

Additional superintendent of police ( ASP) Rajesh Singh Chandel confirmed that a case has been registered. "Right now, a case under sections of fraud and forgery has been registered at the Jehangirabad police station," he said.

As many as 21 policemen (constable rank) were transferred, said sources. What raised suspicion was that contrary to rules most of these policemen were shifted to their home districts. When this was noticed, the PHQ was contacted.

Further, constables' transfer orders are not issued from PHQ. Once, the officials realised that it was a fraud; a First Information Report (FIR) was registered. The Jehangirabad police have registered a case of fraud against unidentified persons.

It is not clear who is responsible for the fraud. However, preliminary inquiry suggests that someone familiar with the working of police (most possibly an insider) could be behind the fake transfer order.
