Members of the Muslim community in Bhopal, led by the Madhya Pradesh chapter of the Jamiat Ulama, on Wednesday came out in large numbers to condemn the activities of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), especially in light of the recent terror attacks in Paris.
Several protestors, holding placards bearing slogans against the ISIS came together at Iqbal Maidan in the Muslim-dominated old city.
Several of the placards read slogans such as “ISIS does not represent me”, “stop ISIS everywhere”, “humanity against terrorism”, among other things.
Addressing the gathering, Haji Haroon, president of the Jamiat Ulama, said that terrorism had no place in Islam.
“We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks in Paris, Turkey, Lebanon and other places. We are worried that terrorists are using Islam in their slogans to appear as Muslims,” he said, adding, “It is also concerning that people now relate terrorism with Islam and with a particular sect. The Jamiat Ulama has always condemned terrorist activities and will oppose it in all possible ways.”
Members from other communities, including Lajja Shankar Hardenia, Hatim Ali, Umar Mansoori, Pinto Lamba and others were also were present in the protest.
