Speaker Sitasharan Sharma adjourned the Madhya Pradesh Assembly for the day on Monday — the opening day of its winter session after Congress MLAs refused to back out from their demand of bringing in an adjournment motion on the issue of thrashing of Bahoriband Congress MLA Saurabh Singh.

The Speaker insisted that the Congress MLAs discuss the issue with him in his chamber instead of shouting slogans in the well of the House. However, the Congress MLAs kept demanding that the Speaker give an assurance on their demand in the House through a statement. Eventually, the Speaker didn't give into their demands and adjourned the House.

The day's proceedings began with taking of oath of newly-elected MLAs and Anglo-Indian nominated MLA followed by condolence messages. Soon after that, Congress' Mukesh Nayak and acting leader of opposition Bala Bachhan demanded that an adjournment motion be brought in to discuss the beating up of Congress MLA Saurabh Singh in Katni during the recent urban bodies polls. MLA Saurabh Singh had arrived in the House on a wheelchair and had his arm in a cast.
