The post of the up-lokayukta is vacant since February 1 this year while the tenure of the lokayukta PP Naolekar would be over in June next year. The state government however, last month, passed an amendment to the Lokayukta Act 1981 making it possible for the lokayukta to hold office for an additional one year (after completion of tenure) till the time a new appointment on the post is made and the incumbent takes office.

In this context, social activist and member of NGO Transparency International, Ajay Dubey has written to the governor, urging him to ensure that the state government comes out with an advertisement to fill up the constitutionally important posts and capable and eligible people with clean track records get selected.

The activist has said in his letter that government has been urged time and again to fill up the vacant post of deputy lokayukta, but to no avail and now there are rumours that a former DGP might be appointed to the post.
