Chhattarpur district panchayat chief executive officer (CEO) Chandra Mohan Thakur has made panchayat representatives and officials uncomfortable by suggesting them to consume excreta if people don’t find allocation of Rs 12,000 sufficient to build toilets.

The IAS officer made the comment on Saturday while addressing a meeting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheme “Gram Uday se Bharat Uday” at the Janpad Panchayat conference hall in Gaurihar town.

Representatives at the meeting said the government aid of Rs12,000 is not enough for constructing toilets under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. “Why are you concerned about Rs 12,000? If you don’t want to build toilets, then go defecate in the open and eat your excreta,” he said.

While Thakur couldn’t be contacted despite repeated attempts of Hindustan Times over his statements, the episode drew flak from both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.

Congress activists burnt Thakur’s effigy in Chhattarpur on Sunday, demanding his removal from the post of district panchayat CEO.
