Police sought to play down the incident by claiming that the minister was not in the car when it occurred.

Verma, however, visited the bereaved family on Friday to offer condolences and confirmed he had been present. “I scolded the driver and told him to take the victim to hospital in the car,” he said. He himself left the scene in an autorickshaw. The driver left 60-year-old Sarla Vajpayee at the nearest hospital and fled.

“The car, flashing a beacon light, was moving at very high speed,” alleged the victim’s nephew, who did not want to be identified.

“Crucial time was also wasted after the accident in arguments. Had my aunt been taken to hospital quickly, she might have survived.”
