PEB scam: MP high court allows STF to question governor

The Madhya Pradesh high court allowed on Monday a special task force to question governor Ramnaresh Yadav in connection with a multi-crore recruitment scam but it remained unclear if he would resign after a police complaint against him last month.

The court, however, asked the investigating agency to “keep the dignity” of the governor’s office in mind during the interrogation, while hearing a petition by the governor to quash an FIR against him in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) scam.

The court also issued a notice to the attorney general of India in the matter and said the STF was free to approach the court if Yadav didn’t cooperate, deferring the next hearing for March 25.

The governor was named in an FIR in February but has refused to quit for over a month now, digging in his heels and visiting the President to explain his position.

Earlier in the day, senior counsel Ram Jethmalani told the court Yadav was ready to share whatever information he possessed but the FIR was against the constitutional immunity granted to the governor, under which no criminal proceedings can be instituted or continued till his term of office. Yadav couldn’t also be arrested due to Constitutional immunity, Jethmalani said.
