A woman’s limbs were severed in an axe attack after she resisted a rape attempt by a man in Satna district on Monday evening, the police said on Tuesday.

The man, identified as 40-year-old Ganesh Singh Bundela, attacked the woman with an axe after her screams for help foiled his rape attempt. The woman is undergoing treatment at a government hospital and is said to be in critical condition.

According to the police, the woman, aged 35, a resident of Kakarha village in Panna district, had gone to graze goats in a forest area on the border of Panna and Satna districts when Bundela, a resident of Khajeh village in Satna district, tried to rape her. However, the victim’s screams forced Bundela to escape.

On her way back, however, Bundela accosted and sexually assaulted her. The woman once again resisted and even slapped her attacker in defence. This angered Bundela to the extent that he attacked the victim with an axe severing her right hand and left leg, in addition to causing grievous injuries to other parts of her body.

Responding to the victim’s cries for help, some labourers working in the vicinity rescued the woman and informed the Jaso police station. The accused, however, succeeded in the fleeing the spot.

The accused was nabbed later on Monday night, informed RK Jaiswal, and a case has been filed on the basis of the victim's statement.
