After reading the Ramayan and watching several versions of it on screen, audiences will now be able to listen to the epic on radio. Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher will lend their voices to Fever RadioRamayan, which will air on weekdays on Fever 104 FM.
New roles
Shah will play the character of Raavana, while Kher will take on the role of Dasharath. Puri has been roped in to narrate the story as Kaal (time). “Kaal has been around since the very beginning — before civilisation and even before the Ramayan. He has seen everything. The show will look at the Ramayan through his eyes,” Puri says. S Keerthivasan, business head, Fever 104 FM says, “Radio is an interesting medium because a lot is left for the listeners to interpret. If we understand that pattern, its not very hard to convey emotions and unspoken thoughts on air.”
Puri, who has played the role of Raavana on TV in Bharat Ek Khoj, is unfazed by the change in medium. “The show will be realistic and devoid of melodrama. A lot of effort has been put into simplifying the language for listeners,” he says. “People who wake up in the morning and listen to bhajans, can now listen to this for 10 minutes.”
Fever Radio Ramayan is scheduled to run for six months. An interesting mix of unknown actors has been roped in alongside these industry heavyweights. “The character of Ram will be played by a newcomer. Listeners will be left to visualise him on the basis of his voice,” says Keerthivasan. Universal appeal Puri hopes that the show will appeal to all kinds of listeners. “Children, office-goers and housewives can all listen to the show at a time that is convenient to them. Those who miss it early in the morning can catch it again in the afternoon or at night.”
