The film Chillar Party has garnered good reviews for itself as the film delivers what it promised. It seems to have succesfully maintained an equilibrium between light-heartedness and thought-provoking messages. The critics give it a thumbs up.

As Chillar Party opens, we are introduced one by one to the feisty gang of innocents around whom the plot revolves. It is probably as adorable a gallery of characters as any you will ever encounter in a Bollywood movie.
Chillar Party got superstar Salman Khan so excited that he came on board as co-producer well after the film had got off the starting blocks. Great judgment – Chillar Party is indeed a film worth backing every which way.
It moves from the light-hearted to the thought-provoking and from the rib-tickling to the tear-jerking without losing its equilibrium. However, The characters are less nuanced individuals than recognisable types, etched out and christened on the basis of their defining traits.
The child actors are outright naturals. Don’t be surprised if many of these names crop up on film credits for years to come.

The reason Chillar Party connects with you instantly is because it is honest and has its heart in the right place. The child actors are neither sugary sweet nor cacophonously cranky. They are pleasantly natural and absolutely believable. The chemistry and charm of the society kids bring back memories of Mani Ratnam's Anjali (1990). Every kid in Chillar Party has an interesting characterization that gives them a unique identity.
The writing is imaginative exploring both, the naughty and the innocent side of nascent years. Scenes showing the society kids being influenced by Fatka's tapori lingo or the ones where the Chillar Party is trying to get a grip on news headlines are hilarious.
But while it primarily works as a fun film, Chillar Party has some very poignant moments that bring a lump in your throat. The scene in initial reels where Fatka is in search of his dog and their subsequent reunion can make the stonehearted go soggy. The unadulterated camaraderie amongst the kids and their selfless solidarity simply touches your heart. Also the heroism that they exude is so endearingly effective as compared to the synthetic bravery of adult actors.

The film has a few really fun moments, especially when a chance remark such as 'Toh chadddi mein ghoomu kya' invokes a 'chaddi march' with a few hundred kids. Or the shameless way they manipulate their parents sans any qualms.
Many 'values' and 'morals' have been woven into the script. Such as how people employ child labour without batting an eyelash. Or how there is no respite for a daily wage earner even when he's shivering with fever. Although it could have been handled in a subtler fashion, but it forms an integral part of the film.
As one of the dailies put it, "Chillar Party is a perfect example of how a children's film need not be childish. Unmissable for children and must-watch for adults!"
