India’s longest running investigative series on TV, CID is getting ready to hit the big screen, complete with an item number.

Producer BP Singh confirms. “CID movie has been in the pipeline for the past three years. We are still developing the script and plan to start shooting sometime next month. The movie will release in early 2012,” Singh says.

The show, which first aired on Sony TV in 1997, is about a team of detectives working for the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Mumbai. The five characters — ACP Pradyuman, senior inspector Abhijeet, senior inspector Daya, inspector Fredericks and Dr Salunkhe — who have been a part of the show for the past 14 years, will be seen in the movie as well.

“We are hoping to chalk out a different investigative case for the film version. Plus we want a story where we can add some songs. Apart from lots of action scenes, we would also try to put in an item number,” says Singh. In 2010 Singh launched the CID Gallantry Awards, an initiative to encourage and honour acts of bravery in society. The second edition of the awards was held in Mumbai last week.

“There is a marked difference in the CID of 1997 and the CID of today. The stories are better and the intensity is greater,” says Singh.
