For most actors, buffing up for a film is the pinnacle of preparation they’re willing to undertake. Ranveer Singh, however, isn’t one to follow the rules. The actor on Friday shared before and after pictures of the dramatic transformation he has undergone in preparation for his new film, Gully Boy. Instead of bulking up and developing an eight-pack, the star has lost a tremendous amount of weight for the film, based on the lives of underground Mumbai rappers. He had bulked up to play Alauddin Khilji in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat.

He captioned the pictures, “Padmaavat -> Gully Boy.”
Ranveer Singh plays Khilji in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial epic, Padmaavat, which will finally be released across India on January 25, after months of backlash against its depiction of the revered Rani Padmavati. The makers have said that the film celebrates Rajput pride and valour.

Videos of the star rapping with real underground artists was widely shared a few months ago, as was his look for the film, which saw him shed the Khilji beard and take on a more unkempt appearance.
Pictures from the film’s sets were also leaked online shortly after shooting began. Gully Boy is tentatively scheduled to release later in 2018.
