He has defined romance in Bollywood for decades and continues to be the industry’s prince charming through his onscreen persona. But Shah Rukh Khan, the actor, is best seen in movies where he essayed roles that were nowhere close to the romantic image he flaunts today.

Birthday boy Shah Rukh Khan has essayed grey roles in films like Anjaam and Raees.

He began his tinsel town journey with Deewana (1992) and went on to essay negative roles in Darr, Baazigar and Anjam before the romantic Raj of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge overshadowed it all. Shah Rukh was recently seen sporting his favourite shades of grey in Raees where he played a gangster.

As the actor celebrates his 52nd birthday on Thursday, we take a look at characters which were grey, and even all-black, and SRK played them with a style all his own.

1. Raees (2017)

2. Anjaam (1994)

Starring opposite Madhuri Dixit, SRK played a psychopath with such finesse that the role got him the Filmfare Award for Best Villain that year.

3. Darr (1993)

Yash Chopra’s film starring Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol in the lead roles was a great stepping stone in SRK’s career that came immediately after his wonderful performance in Baazigar. Shah Rukh was the villain in the movie and his portrayal of the stalker is a chilling watch, even today.

4. Baazigar (1993)

Shah Rukh played a man out to avenge his dad’s death and doesn’t as much as bat an eyelid before killing his enemy’s daughter for the purpose. He woos both the daughters (Kajol and Shilpa Shetty) of Madan Chopra (Dalip Tahil) only to kill one of them and make a fool out of the other. SRK received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Raj in the film.

5. Deewana (1992)

SRK starred opposite Divya Bharti and played the role of Raja who is obsessed with Divya’s character. He was the ‘deewana’ of the title and played the character with a lot of abandon. His prize: Fimfare Award for Best Male Debut.
