Sonu Sood is confident of bagging a role in the forthcoming Dabangg series, the super-hit franchise he flagged off in 2010, even though he’s been replaced by Prakash Raj in the sequel.

“I was offered the film and we tried to work the script around Chhedi Singh and his twin. But creatively it didn’t look great on paper, so I stepped out. But hopefully, I’ll be back in Dabangg 3.

Currently, I’m looking forward to Ek Tha Tiger, bhai (Salman Khan) is looking better with every film.”

For now, every night, Sonu turns into the persona of Dawood Ibrahim and ventures into actual locations where the Dubai don lived in the ’70s. “I’m a local hero in Dongri and am greeted with, Bhai aa gaya, chai peeyoge? (Bhai is here, want tea?). There’s a lot of khatirdari (hospitality),” says Sonu, who plays Dawood in Shootout At Wadala.

Sonu adds that those who grew up with Dawood remember him as a quiet man, but one with an aura of a natural leader. “I don’t resemble him much, but my sheer physicality that helps me dominate a crowd, convinced Sanjay Gupta (writer-director) to cast me,” says Sonu. “Dawood always had a penchant for stylish clothes and glares.”

“I knew it was a risk, but a role like this comes only once in your career. As an actor you’re gambling with every role you play. We’ve done our research well. Hopefully, there’ll be nothing for people to object to.”
