Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has vowed not to step into the shoes of the typical Bollywood hero. He states that the reason behind this is that the mainstream roles offered to the male artists in the industry often suffer from lack of depth and layers.
“It is my conscious decision to not play the typical hero roles because they are very clichéd and I don’t want to get into that because there are no layers or complexity and no dimensions to the performances. This experience I am getting, so I don’t want to get into that area of acting.The hero of Bollywood is typecast easily,” says Nawaz, who was last seen in the film Babumoshai Bandookbaaz.
The 43-year-old actor prefers his roles on the lines of his character in Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, which was a grey character, and much closer to reality.
The actor, known for being an integral part of the offbeat cinema scene in India today, explains how every character brings a certain kind of change in him and how it works the other way around, too.
“The more you experience [you acquire], [the more] your thoughts change. While playing the role of writer Manto [Indo-Pakistani author Saadat Hasan Manto], I could sense a lot of change in myself. There was so much daring in Manto that he wrote about whatever he did. With every character, a change comes. At the very time you change as a person, your choices of characters also change,” says Nawaz, who has, now, started taking up more commercial roles in films such as Munna Michael and Babumoshai Bandookbaaz.
