Ram Gopal Varma’s Not Just A Love Story, that’s lined up for an August 19 opening, is under threat again. Last Saturday, Emile Jerome Matthew — who was sentenced to seven years in prison for the murder of Neeraj Grover — sent Varma a notice stating that he has evidence that the film is the murder which took place on May 7, 2008.
Stating that the film hampers the image of his family, he has threatened to take legal action against the filmmaker— unless all publicity material is withdrawn and the release of the film is stalled.
Varma, however, is not worried. He points out that he never claimed the film was a ‘true story’ and says he’s within his legal rights to make such a film. “I’ve said from the beginning that Not A Love Story is merely ‘inspired’ by the incident and not a representation of the truth.”
Last month, Maria Susairaj, a co-accused in the murder case who was acquitted by the court, also issued a legal notice against the film. Reiterating that the film is a ‘dramatic, fictional account’ based on research, Varma says he’s certain that the film will release as scheduled.
Does he have any apprehensions that Grover’s parents may also send him a legal notice? “I’ve communicated with them through a common friend. They were initially afraid that I might bring up the casting couch angle but I haven’t so they have no cause for concern.”
